Five years ago I was in so much debt that I couldn't think straight. I wasn't eating or sleeping properly. Then I lost one of my jobs (neither one was paying very much, just a bit over minimum wage). I began to be late on my house notes every month. I got into a car accident which threw me behind two months in my house payments. Though I was barely paying the utility bills and eating, I had to have transportation to get back to and from the one job. It was all I had. I had no children so I was denied any type of public assistance.

I totally lost it when I received that dreadful notice displayed on my front door for all of my neighbors to see from Trott & Trott (I was so embarrassed). The notice stated that my house was in foreclosure and that the sheriff sale was about a month or two later. That was the lowest point in my life. I worked so hard to gain home ownership and now Trott & Trott was going to take that away from me. I immediately got on the phone and tried to work out some sort of payment plan with them. They would not listen to me or try to help me in any way, shape or form. In fact they were very rude and short with me over the phone. They made me feel like I was worthless and that I deserved to be out on the street.

A family member recommended that I try Chapter 13 bankruptcy and referred me to Acclaim Legal Services. The thought of going into bankruptcy was both embarrassing and scary to me. Then I thought, well, my credit is already in the toilet; a Chapter 13 can't make my situation any worse than it is. The very next day I contacted Acclaim Legal Services with great hesitation. The young woman on the phone was very pleasant. She asked me a few questions about my situation and told me what I needed to bring to my consultation.

On the day of my consultation, I didn't know what to expect. I thought that I would get some sort of reprimand for allowing myself to be in this financial mess that I was drowning in. Much to my surprise, my lawyer was quite calm and very understanding about my situation. He gave me a brief overview of what I needed to do and what to expect in a Chapter 13 (he thought this was best route for me to go). After my confirmation hearing, the foreclosure was brought to a halt and all nagging creditor calls had ceased.

For the next five years, I was on an extremely tight budget with the Chapter 13 bankruptcy. At one point it was so tight, I couldn't afford to pay my utilities and buy food to eat. I quickly found out that this was no easy process. I contacted my paralegal (Cindy Millns) and informed her of my struggles. The next thing I knew, a motion was filed on my behalf and my payments were lowered so that I could afford to buy food and pay my utilities. Acclaim Legal Services made me feel very comfortable about contacting them with any a questions or concerns that I had with my bankruptcy. I heard many scary stories about Chapter 13 during my five year experience. However, what I learned was that if you are completely honest with your lawyer and you keep him/her abreast of all that's going with you financially, they can help you the most. You cannot be dishonest or omit anything about your situation. Otherwise, the process doesn't work and your lawyer can't help you in the best way possible. I always, always kept an open line of communication with my lawyer and paralegal. They were great at helping me with whatever I needed.

Well, I finally got through my five years of tough budgeting and received my discharge from my bankruptcy. It was a great day when I received the news from the Trustee. Looking back on it all, I've learned to only spend on what I need. I'm saving money now and I have my house with all payments current and no more creditors calling me. I still have to make payment arrangements on my student loan (bankruptcy does not relieve you of student loan obligations; it protects you from being garnished/levied while in bankruptcy). I owe a great deal to Acclaim Legal Services for helping me through this financial ordeal. I have recommended them to friends and family in need of financial assistance. Acclaim Legal Services gives you many options on how you can improve your financial situation, Chapter 13 bankruptcy worked for me. I would encourage anyone to call this firm for help. Prior to filing a Chapter 13 Reorganization, one of my biggest concerns was "how will this affect my credit?" After talking with one of the attorneys at Acclaim Legal Services, they showed me that a Chapter 13 would allow me to consolidate my bills based on my income and my living expenses and lower my overall monthly debt payments. Because of the Chapter 13 I was able to pay back my debts at a fraction of the total amount that I owed and at a monthly payment that was affordable.
